yòu 又 again

(used for an actual action) again

Tā ná-zhe xìn kàn-le-yòu-kàn.
他拿着信看了又看。
He took the letter and read it over and over again.

(reduplicated, with verbs or adjectives) both…and; not only… but also

Zhèr-de dōng-xi yòu hǎo yòu pián-yi.
这儿的东西又好又便宜。
Things here are both of good quality and cheap.

used, sometimes in pairs, to indicate contrary actions or idears

Tā yòu xiǎng qù, yòu bù xiǎng qù, ná-bú-dìng zhǔ-yì.
她又想去，又不想去，拿不定主意。
She couldn’t make up her mind whether to go or not.

also; in addition

Tiān hěn hēi, yòu xià-zhe-yǔ, lù gèng nán-zǒu le.
天很黑，又下着雨，路更难走了。
On top of it being dark it was raining, which made the journey even tougher.
